There are many organisations such as OXFAM, The RED CROSS, Medcine Sans Frontiers etc. which are not sponsored by governments who enter difficult situations to provide relief in many various ways to the affected populations.

Because they are independent of governments they are usually much more acceptable to both sides in any conflict, but it does mean that they rely on voluntary contributions for their funding.

Look on the World Wide Web for Current details of the activities of these organisations.

The British Red Cross has a mission to be the leading provider of emergency help to people in need anywhere in the world.

OVERSEAS

As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the British Red Cross assists in the aftermath of natural and  manmade disasters, such as famine, earthquake and war.

It also helps local communities to better fight
disease and hunger.

IN BRITAIN

It supports the statutory services at the scenes of major emergencies by providing first aid and welfare services to victims and their families.

The work is carried out by 80,000 volunteers, who maintain their skills by delivering services to vulnerable people in local communities.

They help the infirm on discharge from hospital, loaning medical equipment, and helping those separated from their families to be reunited.

The British Red Cross is self-financing, and relies upon the generosity of donors and other supporters to carry out its work.
