Role play the Local Planning Committee designing a new town
Ask the group to imagine they are planning a new town in a green field site.
The group should list what features and services they would need in the town
Ask them to decide what sort of environment they would like to create.
Ask them to design a map of their new town on a large piece of cardboard.
Make simple cardboard cut-outs for factories, industrial estates, residential areas, rubbish tips, out of town shopping areas, etc. which can be moved around at will on the map. This will give the class a simple way to model their ideas.
Remind them about the need for transport infrastructure.
Ask them to spend some thought on what sort of town centre they would like and how it can be affected by any development they create outside of the centre
